Broken Houses

While driving down old country roads,
I see broken houses with stories untold.
They hold memories of days gone by,
Of hopes and dreams that will never die.

Families both young and old
Once occupied these tattered abodes.
Lovers held each other’s hands
And children played gleefully on the land.

On porches they sat staring out
Watching the world as it moved about.
Seeing the sunrise and the sunset,
Memories of when they first met.

Starry skies brought wonderful sights
Special times and romantic nights.
Sweet little girls and laughing boys
In houses filled with fun and toys.

Seasons came and seasons went,
Special times and unique events.
As the years passed, and they did go,
These little houses grew a soul.

Now they are tattered and broken in two.
There’s nothing gleaming, there’s little hue.
Weeds and grass do surround
The little structures where love did abound

They sit and glisten in the moonlight
And in the day are a haunting sight.
Holding memories of days gone by,
Of hopes and dreams that will never die.
