Bridges of Life

A Selection of Poems

By James Bolgiano

When I Was Little

When I was little,

The world was a simpler place.

I made no decisions,

Had no worries

And boogiemen lived only in my closet.

I had no responsibilities

And my every need was met.

The fifty cents

I received for my allowance

Lasted all week

And I always had a nickel or two

Hidden away for emergencies.

War was make-believe

And fought with toy soldiers

In my back yard.

Butterflies and clouds

Would occupy my mind for hours

And when I did not want to socialize,

I stayed in my room.

Grandmas and grandpas

Provided special attention

And oven-baked treats.

Afternoon naps were mandatory

And there were only three channels on TV.

I liked being little.

Being big isn’t what

It’s cracked up to be.
